Newcastle United fans have been reacting to claims from Craig Hope surrounding Callum Wilson and the injury he recently sustained.

Wilson was always going to be an important member for Eddie Howe’s men this season. As their top goalscorer in 2020/21 and leading the way so far in 2021/22, his goals were set to be crucial in their attempts to stay in the Premier League.

However, his and Newcastle’s season suffered a significant setback after he picked up an injury during their draw with Manchester United, with Eddie Howe telling the BBC afterwards that it “looks severe”, fearing he could be out for months rather than weeks.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

Newcastle United journalist Hope recently wrote about the situation, in which he revealed that Wilson will be sent for more scans this week, suggesting: “Early suggestions that Wilson could be out for around six weeks with a calf injury have made way for concern that it could be longer.”

Hope relayed the news to fans via his Twitter page for fans to react to, where it was certainly met with a despondent reaction from the supporters as the reality of potentially seeing him out for a long time hit them hard:

“This is a huge blow but will hopefully force the owners’ hands into something that probably needs to be done now: upgrading him. He’s not getting any younger and with an injury record like his and the money we have, he simply can’t be our first choice striker right now.”

“No striker comes in we’re bang in trouble. Unless @trippier2 can play as a forward?”
“Yikes”
“Nooooooo… Get well soon @CallumWilson
“Are we all just expecting the worst?? And anything better than that is a result?? Get well soon Callum”
“Bad news amongst all the January optimism”

It is certainly not the best news, and a real hammer blow for Newcastle and their survival hopes. They may count themselves lucky that it happened just before the window opened so they at least have a chance to replace him if the club’s worst fears are confirmed.
