TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has been discussing Newcastle United and a potential move for defender Robin Gosens in the January transfer window.

Defending has been something of a lost art for Eddie Howe’s men this season, best exemplified by the fact that they have the second-worst defensive record in the league, behind only Norwich City.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

As a result, it’s no surprise to see that area of the pitch has been earmarked by some as one for improvement. They have already addressed the right-back issue with the signing of Kieran Trippier, and it appears as though they want to solve the left-back issue as well.

Recent reports had them making a move for Lucas Digne before his move to Aston Villa, as well as Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico. Now, according to Crook, Gosens could be the name through the door instead, as he claimed that a deal appeared to be well on the way to being completed.

He said: “Another player attracting interest from Newcastle is Atalanta’s Robin Gosens. He’s a German international who can play as a left wing-back or on the left-hand side of midfield. Paul Dummett filled that role for Newcastle against Watford – this would clearly be a step up.

“Sources in Germany suggesting personal terms between Newcastle and Gosens have already been agreed, they are though yet to come to an agreement with Atalanta in terms of a transfer fee. But that’s one that could well get done between now, not just and the end of the window, but by the time Newcastle play again in the Premier League.”

TIF Thoughts on Alex Crook’s comments about Robin Gosens and Newcastle United…

Will Newcastle sign a defender this week?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Left-back is certainly a position that Newcastle are well stocked in, with Jamal Lewis, Matt Ritchie and the aforementioned Paul Dummett all available to them.

But with Dummett a significant injury risk and Ritchie more naturally suited to being a winger, having played there for the majority of his career, it would certainly be beneficial for Newcastle to try and bring in someone like Gosens to try and bolster the squad in that position for the months ahead.

And if Crook is right that the German could be in place for their next game against Leeds United, then all the better, because they need bodies in as soon as possible to give themselves the best chance of staying in the division.
