A number of Newcastle United fans have found themselves extremely excited after hearing that Chris Wood is set to undergo a medical ahead of his transfer to the club.

With the Magpies looking to avoid relegation this season, they seemed destined to add a number of first-team signings in the January transfer window. Already, former Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Tripper has joined and now it looks as though the Burnley striker will follow him.

Indeed, according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Kiwi forward is set to have his medical after the club triggered his £20m release clause.

The news was tweeted out online and it quickly drew many responses from the happy Newcastle supporters.

Here’s what these NUFC fans said…

“I wanted Chris Wood at Newcastle when he was still at Leeds, I think this is a great bit of business for where we’re at.”
“Happy Wednesday”
“Here we go!”
“That’s A Great Signing & I Can Only Imagine How Wood Will Work With Saint-Maximin…Saint-Maximin’s Creativity, Flare & All Round Game With Wood’s Clinical & Striking Presence.”
“Love you Fab, have a great day x.”
“If Chris Wood scores a few goals and keeps us in the Premier League then he is worth £150m.”

As shown by these tweets, the supporters must feel as if Wood can score the goals to help them stay up this season.

Will Chris Wood's goals keep Newcastle up?

To be fair, in the four seasons prior to this one, he has scored at least 10 league goals for Burnley. He also has plenty of experience, too, netting 50 times in 155 appearances in England’s top flight.

If that form can translate across to Newcastle, he might well be the difference between Premier League and Championship football next term.
