Luke Edwards has been speaking on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily podcast about what Newcastle United’s transfer budget could end up being.

With Newcastle sitting 19th in the Premier League and just one win to their name all season, it is very clear that PIF, the league’s wealthiest owners, are set to make a big splash in their first transfer market to ensure Eddie Howe has all the tools at his disposal to keep the club in the Premier League.

Will Newcastle sign Trippier?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

However, they are also not going to be going overboard with the club now having reservations over a move for Sven Botman, according to Luke Edwards, as Lille have claimed he’s not for sale, despite reports suggesting Newcastle were going to pay £30 million for the Dutchman.

Edwards has made the following prediction over what he thinks will be spent on Tyneside across January:

“Well, they can spend as much as £190 million. Everything I’ve heard up to this point has pointed me down the direction of it will be less than that.

“I wouldn’t be surprised – if you’d have asked me three or four weeks ago, I’d have said they’ll spend about £50-60 million. I’m now going to put that figure at closer to £100 million.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s transfer budget…

If the Magpies do end up spending £100 million in January, that may send a strong signal of intent to the rest of the league that they now mean business, and if good enough signings are brought in, avoiding relegation will certainly be on the cards.

Howe and the club’s owners will know that while signing young players with potential such as Botman are the type of visionary signings that could set the club up for years to come, bringing in players that weaken their fellow rivals like James Tarkowski, who reportedly wishes to make a switch and has Premier League experience at the bottom of the league, could be more of a priority.
