Luke Edwards has been speaking on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily podcast about Newcastle United’s attempts to bring in Kieran Trippier.

It is becoming increasingly more likely that Newcastle and Eddie Howe will soon make their breakthrough in the January transfer window and bring Trippier to St. James’ Park, with the full-back seemingly waving goodbye to Atletico Madrid fans after their win on Sunday.

Will Newcastle sign Trippier?

No!

According to Sky Sports, a bid was lodged last week by the Magpies, and Telegraph journalist Edwards has since confirmed that the club are certainly hoping to get the England international through the door and thus kick off a flurry of transfer activity.

“The Kieran Trippier deal, there’s definite interest, I think that’s fairly advanced. All my sources at Newcastle have said that they definitely want him.

“I think they were hoping to make him the first player through the door, and I think that would, although he’s 31 and he’s an established England international, he’s far better than any of the full-backs they’ve currently got.”

While Edwards has reported that there is solid interest in Trippier and that Newcastle are hopeful of getting him, the deal could become even more advanced very soon, with Ryan Taylor reporting that the Magpies will raise their offer to £25 million.

When you look at the experience Trippier has for both club and country, as well as what he’s won with Atletico Madrid, he would be an instant upgrade on what Eddie Howe already has at his disposal, not to mention that Diego Simeone wants him to remain in Madrid, which shows how highly regarded he still is, despite being in his early thirties.
