Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed on Good Morning Transfers which defenders Newcastle United have an interest in.

Sven Botman was seen as Eddie Howe’s number-one centre-back target in this transfer window as he looks to improve a defence that has already shipped 42 goals in the Premier League.

Is Trippier worth £25 million?

Yes!

No!

No!

However, according to Luke Edwards, Lille have rejected a bid of around £30m which was lodged by Newcastle, and while that will be a blow, the Dutch defender is not the only centre-back Howe and the club have their eyes on.

Downie has revealed which two other centre-backs they are interested in.

“There are other defenders as well: Joe Rodon at Spurs, who I think would be available on a loan deal providing the [virus] situation at Spurs doesn’t get difficult, I think that’s one they could be interested in. And Jason Denayer, the former Sunderland defender, is a player that the club are interested in as well.”

TIF Thoughts on these Newcastle United targets…

Botman would have been a sensational signing for the Magpies considering he is 21 years old, has been called up to his national side and won Ligue 1 while not playing for Paris Saint-Germain, while clubs such as AC Milan are tracking him, so he clearly has something about him.

If Newcastle managed to bring in Joe Rodon, they would be adding Premier League experience to their ranks and a defender with age on his side – something their other centre-backs certainly do not have, but then Jason Denayer would arrive with experience in several leagues as well as the Champions League, so could be a signing for the future as well as the here and now if they were to pursue the Belgian.
