Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel about Newcastle United’s interest in Lucas Digne.

It was reported on Wednesday evening by Keith Downie that Newcastle had lodged a bid worth £22.5m plus Sean Longstaff for Digne, although the Sky Sports man later tweeted that an official bid had not actually been made for the Frenchman.

Will Newcastle sign Digne?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

It is thought Everton and Rafael Benitez hold an interest in Longstaff with the Spaniard handing him his Premier League debut at Newcastle, and that has led to a straight offer being made for the midfielder – although that has been rejected, according to Sky Sports.

Romano was someone on Twitter who was quite vocal in terms of stating that Digne would not be going to Newcastle and that there was ‘no way’ he’d be moving to Tyneside.

The Italian journalist dealt a major blow to Newcastle’s pursuit of Digne.

“I’m told [the] defence is a very key role for Newcastle, so [Kieran] Trippier [will be their] new right-back, they’re going for a new left-back and this is not going to be Lucas Digne – today we had rumours of Digne [being] close to joining Newcastle; I’m told, absolutely fake.

“He’s not going to Newcastle. He is leaving Everton, so keep an eye on Lucas Digne in the coming days.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s interest in Digne…

It appears that Newcastle may have a tough job on their hands convincing Digne to leave Goodison Park and move to Tyneside given that he reportedly prefers a move to London, with both West Ham United and Chelsea interested in the player.

Having the chance of playing in either the Champions League or Europa League would surely be a much bigger pull and opportunity for Digne compared to fighting in a relegation scrap with Newcastle.

And with the Toon looking unlikely to lure the Frenchman to Tyneside, judging by Romano’s comments, considering what they were willing to part with to bring him in, it could be seen as a big blow to whatever their January plans were.
