Manchester United parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this season, appointing Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis in late November.

Antonio Conte was rumoured to be in the running for the vacant hotseat and was tipped for the role by pundits, but he didn’t fit the bill and ultimately ended up at Tottenham Hotspur prior to Solskjaer’s departure.

Having left the San Siro after winning the league title with Inter, Conte will have felt he had options over his next move with his recent success.

Talking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Show, reporter Kaveh Solhekol went into detail about how the rejection impacted the Italian, saying: “He wanted that job. He was waiting for the phone call. People close to him were surprised when they were told that Manchester United will not be coming in for him, he’s not the profile of coach they’re looking for.”

TIF Thoughts on Antonio Conte…

Conte’s CV is certainly impressive. Let’s not forget, on top of his four Serie A titles, he guided Chelsea to the Premier League in 2016/17.

Given the current state of Manchester United, the fact they almost appear to have turned their nose up at the Italian is a surprise. They’re struggling to make inroads into the top four and suffered a humiliating defeat at home to arch-rivals Liverpool in October, which compounds the mess they are in currently.
