Leeds United fans have been reacting to comments made by Angus Kinnear about the club and their January transfer window plans.

Leeds have so far been incredibly quiet so far in this January transfer window, with the only movement so far being that of 18-year-old Mateo Joseph Fernandez, who was primarily a signing for the club’s U23 side.

This might come across as rather strange, because given Leeds’ trouble when it comes to injuries as a result of their small squad, you’d think that it might be beneficial for them to try and add a few more players to the side to help them fight off the threat of relegation – something that’s a real possibility given their proximity to the drop.

However, according to Kinnear in his column in Saturday’s match programme (via Leeds Live), the focus this window isn’t necessarily on buying players for the first team, but rather looking after the club’s younger stars, saying:

Who was sent off in his first game as captain?

“Our analysis indicates that many January options, requiring an eight-figure investment, would not be a material improvement on the current performances of emerging players such as Bate, Hjelde and Joe Gelhardt.”

The comments did not go down at all well with Leeds fans when they saw them come through on social media:

“What’s the point in this if we get relegated?”

“This is a short sighted and nonsensical statement! The Squad is stretched and the use of youth to cover is impacting Mark Jackson’s selections in the U23s current relegation fight, requiring him to dip into the U18s. This has a domino effect throughout the club!”
“Unfortunately investing in youth is a long-term process, it doesn’t help the situation now. It’s clear to see we need a striker and at least 1 or 2 other additions. But, here we are on the 23rd January with absolutely nothing! We are playing with fire!”
“That’s pointless cause Bielsa doesn’t play them”
“Same old rubbish”
“Risky business”
“I’m actually done”
“Embarrassing”

So it looks as if the club are looking after the future, which is a respectable stance to take to make sure the club can go on for years to come. However, let’s just hope they haven’t sacrificed their present and Premier League survival in order to make that happen.

So let me get this straight Angus we will only be signing for the U23’s. So i guess we plan on being the best team in the championship ! Do you think Bielsa, Phillips, Raphinha, Meslier and even Bamford are going to stick around. I don’t think so.

Are our under 23’s midfielders good enough? I think not in the immediate future he obviously feels we’ve enough to survive this season it’s a risky ploy
