Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor has been discussing Vitor Pereira and the possibility of him becoming the next manager at Everton.

The Toffees are without a permanent manager at the moment after they parted ways with Rafael Benitez last week, with former Everton forward Duncan Ferguson having been announced as their interim manager until a new face comes through the door.

What was the fee for Everton paid for Fabian Delph?

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy, including those of former Premier League and England stars Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney, but according to O’Connor, there is another man who is being thrown into the mix to take over, and it’s someone who has been close to taking over the role before.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Good Morning Transfers, O’Connor claimed that 53-year-old Pereira, who was a candidate to take over back in 2013 as well as 2019, is being considered by the Toffees once again to succeed Benitez.

O’Connor said: “Another name being considered is Vitor Pereira. He, of course, was again in the running for the Everton manager’s job ahead of the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as well.”

Making a move for Pereira certainly does come across as the smarter option compared to the likes of the aforementioned Rooney and Lampard.

Given Everton’s position in the table, just six points above the relegation zone, it would be a bit of a risk to hand the job to someone as relatively inexperienced as Lampard or Rooney, who have just over 200 games’ worth of managerial experience between them, whereas Pereira has more than double the amount.

And whilst he hasn’t managed in the Premier League, having been in charge of some big clubs like Fenerbahce, Olympiacos and FC Porto – winning plenty of silverware along the way – he will come to the club with a winner’s mentality that might not only help them get out of the rut that they are in now, but could also help them move forward as a club for the next few years beyond this season.

Everton clearly like him as a manager to have wanted to bring him for so long, so perhaps it will be a case of ‘third time’s a charm’ for the Toffees in their attempts to land the Portuguese tactician.
