Everton’s appointment of Rafael Benitez certainly raised eyebrows on Goodison Park, which is no surprise when you consider his famous stint in charge of their rivals across Stanley Park. It’s been a disappointing start too, sitting just 15th in the table.

With frustrations growing for the Toffees, pundits and journalists have been looking at potential replacements for Benitez, and Wayne Rooney’s name keeps appearing. First of all, speaking recently on TalkSport (via Liverpool Echo), Ray Parlour has tipped Rooney as a good option if they do part ways with the Spaniard.

Then, talking on ESPN’s YouTube channel as part of The Gab & Juls Show, journalist Julien Laurens said the following: “He was a proper blue… I don’t know if Wayne Rooney’s the answer, certainly doing a really good job at Derby in very difficult circumstances and context, but I’m more and more convinced that Rafa Benitez is not the answer for sure at Everton. There’s something that’s just not working there.

“He says we have to defend better – okay, I thought that was your forte, to make a team being solid and defend well; that’s clearly not the case.”

TIF Thoughts on Benitez’s future…

There’s no hiding that the season has been underwhelming so far under Benitez, but he was barely backed in the summer. He made some free signings and Demarai Gray for under £2 million, so it was always going to be tough to implement a style of football with little backing.

Which famous actress supports Everton?

Things have already changed less than a week into January. Everton have signed Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson for just under £35 million combined.

It makes sense to give him more time now he’s had some more backing with transfers. On top of that, why on earth would Everton sack a manager after a couple of big signings?
