Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor has been speaking live on air to discuss the latest in Everton’s search for a new permanent manager.

It was revealed on Tuesday afternoon the Toffees had appointed former player Duncan Ferguson as their caretaker manager until they find a long-term solution.

Would you have Ferguson until the end of the season?

Yes

No

No

Claims have suggested Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard will be interviewed by the board at Everton regarding the vacant managerial role left by Rafael Benitez’s sacking.

Over the course of the last few seasons, the Merseyside club have seen their hopes of Europan football dashed, with no league finishes higher than 10th over the last two campaigns.

And with the Toffees slumped down in 16th spot in the Premier League table, O’Connor had the following to say on whether Ferguson could see out the season as the Everton manager:

“Ferguson, as I mentioned, taking training yesterday, and there’s a feeling – certainly the noises that we hear would be – that Duncan Ferguson would welcome the opportunity to take charge of Everton at least until the end of the season.

“And that would certainly buy Everton a little bit of breathing room in terms of getting this decision right now, and of course, time to complete that strategic review, which would enable them to get the structure around the new manager right as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Everton’s manager search…

We have already seen an interim appointment until the end of the 2021/22 campaign made this season, with Manchester United allowing themselves plenty of time to find a long-term successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And we think this could be a good option for the Toffees to consider with half of the season left to go. There is a six-point gap between Everton and the relegation zone, but a couple of positive results could take them clear of the danger.

Ferguson has previous experience of filling the boots of a sacked manager at Goodison Park back in 2019, which saw the Scotsman pick up five points from an available nine in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

Benitez only lasted a matter of months in the job at Goodison Park, and after the frustrations from the fans at the appointment, we feel the board need to get the next appointment right.
