TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has been discussing Duncan Ferguson and his potential future at Everton following his recent appointment.

The Toffees have named Ferguson as their caretaker boss ahead of their clash with Aston Villa this weekend, following the departure of Rafael Benitez last week. It’s a role that Ferguson has done before, having stepped into the Goodison Park dugout following Marco Silva’s departure in 2019.

During that spell, he managed to do a respectable job, going undefeated in the league, and only being knocked out of the EFL Cup by virtue of a penalty shootout to Leicester City.

And speaking on the TalkSport GameDay podcast, Crook claimed that he could very well spend a little bit more time in the dugout this time around than he did just over a couple of years ago, as he is supposedly one of the names being considered to take over the role on a long-term basis.

What was the fee for Everton paid for Fabian Delph?

He said: “Listen, he’s caretaker manager, Everton have said they will make a formal announcement on a long-term successor to Rafa Benitez in due course. As I understand it, Duncan Ferguson is part of those conversations. If he does well this time around, I think he might well keep the job at least until the end of the season.”

Should Everton give Duncan Ferguson the manager role?

It certainly will be interesting to see whether or not Ferguson will be able to repeat what he was able to do last time he was in temporary charge, and what sort of impact that is going to have on just how long he will be able to last in the role.

Because if he is able to have a similar impact this time around, then it is only fair that he be given the chance to take on the role in a permanent capacity.

However, as Manchester United showed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, sometimes it isn’t always best to base your decision on what someone did whilst they were in temporary charge at the club, because you might get lulled into a false sense of security.

So a good run of form should hand him the opportunity to be considered when the club start drawing up a final shortlist of permanent managers rather than the Scot being given the job automatically.
