Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has been discussing Crystal Palace and their plans for the remainder of the January transfer window.

Eagles boss Patrick Vieira was handed a very difficult task when he took over the club during the summer, having to deal with a major overhaul of an ageing squad, but he has managed to handle the first half of the season rather well.

He made a number of signings in the summer to help change the face of the squad, and has managed to steer them to a respectable 11th in the table – even more impressive considering some outlets had predicted that they would finish bottom come May.

The Eagles do have the chance to make further changes to help solidify the squad during this window, but according to Sheth, that won’t be the case.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ The Transfer Show during a brief round-up of the Premier League clubs, he claimed that there wasn’t much chance of Palace bringing in any more players before the window closes, barring some last-minute changes when it came to two of their current players.

Which player has returned to Selhurst Park after starting his career there?

He said: “Crystal Palace love a late deal, but as it stands, no incomings expected due to the form of Jean-Philippe Mateta and Christian Benteke’s reluctance to leave.”

Will Palace sign Gallagher permanently?

No!

No!

Sheth’s latest does come across as a rather sensible approach for Crystal Palace to be taking during the transfer window, because there isn’t really any need for them to change anything.

They are doing well in the league, in no immediate danger of getting relegated and appear unlikely to make a serious challenge for Europe, so they don’t need to disrupt the squad by making any changes that aren’t necessary.

This year was always going to be about stabilising and staying up whilst they got through the first stage of the rebuild and into the new regime – and they are doing well at that so far. So their focus should really be on who they can attract when the summer comes around once they have another year of Premier League prize money to play with.
