Dan Cook has been speaking about the future of Jean-Philippe Mateta at Crystal Palace on the HLTCO podcast.

It has previously been reported and highly expected that Crystal Palace will cut Mateta’s loan deal short as he has failed to feature much and thus not impressed Patrick Vieira. However, he has featured in the club’s previous three games and was on the scoresheet recently against Norwich City.

Who would be better for Crystal Palace?

Mateta!

Mateta arrived last January on loan under Roy Hodgson but has only been able to score three times in all competitions, and with Mainz wanting £13.4 million for the striker, it appears that money could be spent elsewhere, with the likes of Eddie Nketiah being tipped for a move to Selhurst Park.

Cook believes that Palace will be looking to cut their ties with Mateta.

“From what I can gather anyway, the feeling behind the scenes at the football club is that Jean-Philippe Mateta is not worth £14 million of our money.”

TIF Thoughts on Mateta…

If Crystal Palace are going to sign a striker this transfer window, then it would make sense for them to stop paying a contribution towards Mateta’s wages and send him back to Mainz. However, with Jordan Ayew heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations for the next few weeks, they may do a lot worse than keeping someone who knows the club and manager around until the summer.

The loan deal does not include an obligation to buy for Palace, therefore, they could hand him the remainder of the season to really prove he’s good enough to compete with the likes of Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard before making a final decision in the summer, instead of shelling out on a new striker who would have to fit in and settle immediately.
