Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel to discuss the potential arrival of Everton star Lucas Digne at Aston Villa.

The French left-back has been at the centre of transfer speculation already this month, with his time at Goodison Park seemingly at its conclusion amid links to Steven Gerrard’s side among others.

Is Lucas Digne an improvement on Targett?

Yes

No

No

Indeed, a number of clubs have emerged as potential landing spots for the 28-year-old over the last week, and it now seems Chelsea and Newcastle United are both out of the picture for the defender.

Steven Gerrard’s side have already secured the services of Philippe Coutinho this month and it is believed they are closing in on the potential acquisition of Digne.

With Villa narrowly losing 1-0 against Manchester United on Monday night, Romano had the following to say on Digne’s potential arrival:

“So let’s see, Aston Villa are into it, they’re negotiating. The player is open to [joining] Aston Villa, he’s attracted by this possibility because of Coutinho, because of Steven Gerrard. So there are many factors that are tempting Lucas Digne.

“Let’s see what happens, but they are into it and I think this week will be key to understand if he’s going to Aston Villa or to some different club maybe out of England, so from different countries.”

TIF Thoughts on Digne to Villa…

We think this would be a great addition to Villa’s defence, as the Frenchman has proved over his years with the Toffees that he is a threat going forward, with seven assists in his last two full league seasons.

With this in mind, we think Digne would be a clear improvement on their current left-back, Matt Targett, who has not quite offered the same numbers over the years.

Villa have not fared amazingly in defence this season, with the seventh-most goals conceded (30) this league campaign, so any further help with their backline would surely be welcomed with open arms.
