Arsenal have been linked to a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, with the Dutchman potentially looking for a Premier League return.

He left Anfield on a free last summer and joined the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos at PSG. So far, it hasn’t quite gone how he’d have wanted.

He has only started 10 out of a total 17 Ligue 1 appearances so far, while only completing the full 90 minutes on five occasions – that’s always going to be frustrating for a player after a summer move.

With that, Sky Sports has taken a look at the potential of him returning to England, with Arsenal among those linked with a move for the ex-Liverpool man this month.

Reporter Kaveh Solhekol, who was speaking on The Transfer Show, looked at the current situation for Wijnaldum, saying: “He has started the past three games for PSG. I think the situation is, if he’s not starting regularly for PSG, then he will want to return to the Premier League, but as long as he is starting – and PSG are in the Champions League, I think they’re playing Real Madrid next month – it would be a big decision for him to leave.”

TIF thoughts on Wijnaldum to Arsenal…

As it stands, Arsenal have lost midfielders Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny to the Africa Cup of Nations, so a quick January recruit in the middle of the park would be good, sensible business.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Let’s not forget the class the Dutchman has. He left Anfield as a Premier League and Champions League winner – experience that could have a positive impact on the club should he make the switch.

However, as Solhekol mentioned, he has been in the team recently, so the chances of a potential move may have taken a minor setback.
