Football writer Charles Watts has claimed that this week could define Arsenal’s plans to try and sign midfielder Arthur Melo.

With the January transfer market open, the Gunners had been linked with a move for the Juventus ace. However, as of yet, no deal has been agreed upon.

With time ticking away, Mikel Arteta may want to get this deal sorted. Now, according to Watts, the Serie A club will only let Arthur leave if they can bring in a replacement – with Denis Zakaria and Bruno Guimaraes being named as potential targets.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, he claimed that if one of those deals can be sorted in the near future, it will free up the Brazilian to make his move.

Will Arsenal make a signing this January?

No

He said: “Now, this week, as far as I’m being told from someone over in Italy, that this is a big week in terms of Juve potentially bringing in a replacement. They’re looking at Zakaria and Bruno Guimaraes over Lyon as well.

“If they can get something done for either of those two players, then that will free up Arthur to complete his move to Arsenal until the end of the season. And that’s where we are in that situation.”

TIF Thoughts on Arthur Melo and Arsenal…

As things stand, Arsenal look pretty light in midfield. Indeed, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Granit Xhaka is serving a suspension, while Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard have both been struggling for fitness.

Taking all that into account, it’s not hard to understand why they are seeking out a new option in the middle of the park. No doubt, the club will want to get a deal over the line as quickly as possible.

However, if Watts is right with his information, the deal really does seem to depend on how quickly, if at all, Juventus can sign either Borussia Monchengladbach man Zakaria or Ligue 1 star Guimaraes.
