Ian McGarry has been speaking on The Transfer Window podcast about Mike Ashley’s potential takeover of Derby County.

It’s safe to say that’s it’s been a torrid time for Derby fans this season off the field, with their club entering administration and several potential new owners failing to follow through with their promises. However, an unlikely saviour in the form of Mike Ashley could be about to come to their rescue.

Would Mike Ashley be a good owner for Derby?

No!

According to Derbyshire Live, 1st February has been earmarked as a critical date for Derby, as they will have to prove that they’ve got the necessary funds to complete this Championship campaign, so if Ashley, who’s reportedly interested in buying the club, can complete a purchase before then, it would be a huge miracle.

McGarry has revealed Ashley’s stance on a potential takeover when speaking on The Transfer Window podcast, which came out on Wednesday evening.

“I was told this morning that Ashley is quite happy to take it to the wire with making an offer, as long as there is a reduction in the tax debt that’s owed as well as from the administrators with regards to the creditors.

“Ashley is a shrewd businessman, so it’s hardly surprising that this is certainly a way of operating in terms of getting more value for the money that he is willing to invest.”

TIF Thoughts on Mike Ashley’s potential takeover of Derby County…

Judging by what McGarry has had to say, this potential takeover seems far from straightforward, with Ashley not wanting to take on any more debt than he has to, as he already did that when he bought Newcastle United.

Something that appears to be holding up this potential deal is that Middlesbrough have now lodged an appeal to the EFL claiming that Derby’s failure to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations stopped them from earning a play-off spot, and the Teesside club are suing the Rams as a result. This could see a whole chunk of money being taken from the club that could ultimately lead to liquidation.
