Journalist Russell Edge has dropped a big update when it comes to the contract situation surrounding Rangers defender Connor Goldson.
The 28-year-old defender has been a near ever-present in the Rangers side so far this season, playing all 90 minutes in all bar two games this campaign, but it’s what’s happening with him off the pitch that is one of the big talking points around Ibrox at the moment.
He is set to enter the final six months of his contract when the January transfer window rolls around, but the club didn’t seem to be paying too much attention to the matter, with Goldson stating in October that he hadn’t heard anything from the club with regards to a new deal at that point in time.
And now according to Edge, who was speaking on a video for the Football Insider Facebook page, time may have run out when it comes to the negotiations, as he claims that the 28-year-old has turned down the club’s most recent offer.
“We understand here at Football Insider that Goldson has rejected a new contract offer from Rangers and is looking at a potential Premier League return. The 28-year-old’s future is now very firmly up in the air with his deal running out at the end of the season. And as I say, Ibrox sources have told us that Goldson has knocked back Rangers’ offer of an extension amid interest from south of the border.
“The hope was at Rangers that he would sign a contract extension before January, but unfortunately for Rangers, hope among the club hierarchy that he would sign an extension has evaporated in recent months.”

This does leave Rangers in a very perilous position right now when it comes to what they want to do with Goldson. They can either sell him in January and hope to get something back for him rather than allowing him to leave on a free transfer, or they can hold onto him and hope that they can change his mind somewhere down the line.
We think that it would probably be best if Rangers sold him in January rather than risk losing him for nothing. With Giovanni van Bronckhorst having recently been appointed, the money that they get for him, as well as what they would save in terms of wages, could be a great help to him as he looks to build the team in his own image.
They might not get much for him considering what little is left on his deal, but every little helps in this situation, and whilst it might not make much of a difference for this season, a move here could help lay the foundations for years to come as Rangers look to turn their one title success last year into something that could rival Celtic’s domination of the 2010s.
