Wolves journalist Liam Keen has given his thoughts on forward Hwang Hee-chan and his long-term future at the club.

The South Korean made a reasonably good start to life in the Premier League having joined on a season-long loan from German side RB Leipzig in the summer.

He managed to hit the ground running with four goals in his first six games in the division, whilst forming a pretty impressive duo with Raul Jimenez up top. That hot streak has since died off however, as he has failed to bag either a goal or an assist since then.

The loan does have the option to become permanent, and after the start he had, there were reports circulating that a deal could be done as soon as the upcoming January transfer window.

But speaking on the latest edition of the E&S Wolves podcast (1:09:46), Keen stressed that whilst Wolves boss Bruno Lage appears to be on board with the idea of signing him permanently, he didn’t think it was an absolute certainty that they would make the deal official during the coming months:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a banker because the deal is for the end of the season so it will take some renegotiation, but you’d imagine it wouldn’t be too difficult to do, so if they wanted to get it done which Bruno’s made clear they want to… You’d imagine that they probably want it to happen and that they probably will get it done, I don’t expect it will be too big an issue.

“But then if it doesn’t happen, it’s not a massive issue if it doesn’t get done because of the deal they’ve got in place anyway for the end of the season.”

TIF Thoughts on Liam Keen’s comments about Hwang Hee-chan and Wolves

This is the right approach for Wolves to take as it pertains to Hwang’s future. As his production so far this season has shown, he isn’t exactly consistent when it comes to scoring goals and whilst it does seem that there is potential for him to become a Premier League-standard player, it would be wise of them to take as much time as they can to assess the situation.

The last thing that Wolves want to do is to be guilty of recency bias and base their decision purely on the start that he had and then end up with someone who turned out just to be a flash in the pan and waste their money on a flop.

If there was a clause in the contract that stated a decision had to be made in January, then it would be a totally different discussion and one that Wolves might have ended up stressing over a little bit more, but the deal as it stands allows for flexibility and they should use every bit of it to their advantage.
