Football journalist and transfer expert Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest episode of Touchline Talk to discuss West Ham United’s interest in Jesse Lingard.

The Hammers are no stranger to the 29-year-old and his abilities after he spent the back-end of the 2020/21 campaign on loan with David Moyes’ side.

Do you want Lingard back?

No

No

However, the midfielder did not return after the successful loan spell in east London and instead looked to reclaim a spot in the Manchester United first team.

The decision has backfired, with Lingard a regular fixture on the Old Trafford bench this season, with just 87 minutes of Premier League action to his name so far (via Transfermarkt).

Now, a matter of months later, the midfielder is being linked with a potential move in January, and speaking on the Hammers’ interest in the 32-cap midfielder, Jones had the following to say:

“I mean, they’re definitely going for Jesse. So, I was told the other day that as soon as the window’s open, they are going to reopen negotiations on Jesse Lingard and see what’s happening, because it looks like from afar that he’s not going to fit in under [Ralf] Rangnick. And it looks like he’s not going to sign a new contract.”

TIF Thoughts on Lingard to WHUFC…

We think this is a no-brainer for all parties involved. Given the excellent form he showed during his loan spell at the London Stadium, we have little doubt in the Hammers being open to him returning next month.

As for Lingard, he is clearly not in Man United’s plans given the lack of minutes he has played so far this season, and with just a matter of months left on his deal, this will offer the Red Devils the last chance to cash in on the 29-year-old.

Lingard has also been linked with a potential move to Newcastle United, however, from the player’s point of view, we think West Ham is the obvious choice having already proven what he is capable of there – as well as their current league position compared to the Magpies.

And even from West Ham’s point of view, Michail Antonio is struggling in front of goal lately. If Lingard could return and find the form he showed last season, then surely, this will put the Hammers in good stead for their latest European push.
