Tottenham Hotspur have been in the running to sign Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne, but the latest updates suggest that he may snub the London club for a move elsewhere.

The 30-year-old’s contract is up in the summer, with reports in Italy suggesting that Spurs were monitoring the situation. However, those claims appear to have been dealt a blow.

It is now being reported by Calciomercato that MLS outfit Toronto FC have offered the experienced Italian a monster contract of £20m (£15.1m) per year, which works out in the region of £290,000 per week.

These Spurs fans weren’t having any of it, though, claiming that the rumours weren’t true…

What these Tottenham fans said

“I swear there’s a salary cap in the MLS where one player can’t get that much a week.” @King_Dontz

Who writes this stuff? Carlos Vela is the highest paid player in the MLS right now and he’s on less than £100k a week.@ShaySpurs

“There’s no chance. High Premier League wages in MLS?” @G__Division

“Yeah, righto” @THFCtid_v2

“£17m per season? For Insigne? lol.” @footyXupdate

“There’s another one gone.” @DamienDzanic

Clearly not believing the rumours, maybe the Spurs faithful are still hopeful that they can pull off the signing of Insigne.

The 30-year-old is a very influential player as captain of Napoli, with five goals and six assists this season in just 18 games, a solid return for a wide attacking player.

Starting with a current Tottenham star. How many PL goals has Harry Kane scored for Spurs?

His career has seen him rack up 320 Serie A games, scoring 89 times and setting up 74 goals, so he is involved in a goal just under every other game.

With Harry Kane still stuck on just the one Premier League goal this term and no obvious alternative at centre-forward for Tottenham, hopefully they can still land the Italian. With Carlos Vela the highest-paid player in MLS on $6.3m (£4.76m) per year, perhaps the reports of a £15.1m-a-year deal from Toronto for Insigne are indeed wide of the mark.
