ESPN pundit Gabriele Marcotti has expressed his concern regarding one aspect of a potential transfer swoop by Tottenham Hotspur for Dusan Vlahovic.

Scoring goals certainly hasn’t been Tottenham Hotspur’s strong point so far this season, with just 16 goals scored in their opening 14 Premier League games, falling well short in comparison to other sides amongst them in the top six.

And with Harry Kane’s future still very much in doubt, with reports suggesting that Manchester City could return and make a bid for him, it’s no surprise to see that they are looking for alternative options.

One such name being linked with a move to north London is the Serbian Vlahovic, who has turned down multiple contract offers from current club Fiorentina as he gets set to enter the final 18 months of his current deal in January.

But speaking on ESPN FC’s Extra Time, Marcotti claimed that whilst he felt the Serbian was a good player, there was one pretty big obstacle for a club like Spurs to get past before they could entertain signing the 21-year-old.

He said: “Vlahovic looks really, really, really good. He’s had the tools, this is the first year that things have really come together for him. You’re talking around about 70, 75 million, his contract’s winding down. The one caveat, I think to anybody who wants to buy Vlahovic, is that his agents aren’t always the easiest people to deal with. So, ‘caveat emptor’, as they say.”

Will Spurs sign Vlahovic in January?

Yes

Yes

No

No

This doesn’t come across as the best news for Tottenham fans who might have wanted the club to make a run at signing Vlahovic, either in January or next summer.

That’s not only because of the role that his agents could play, but when you combine that with Daniel Levy and his reputation of being tough to negotiate with – something which he himself acknowledges – then it doesn’t look like the kind of deal that can be ironed out quickly, if at all.

Perhaps the introduction of Antonio Conte, who, according to reports in Italy was quite demanding when it came to his desires for the January transfer window, might convince Levy to be less restricted when it comes to spending.

Because as the numbers show, Tottenham have got an awful lot of work to do when it comes to putting balls into the back of the net, and someone like Vlahovic could really help them, but bringing him to Spurs could prove to be a very challenging task indeed.

If Daniel Levy lets this one get away he should be shot on the spot. We’ve been after him so long and could have signed him earlier for less, it’s his fault for not pulling the trigger sooner. Buy Vlahovic and sell Kane to City. With what’s left over sort out another centre back.
