Speaking on the latest Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano has claimed Tottenham Hotspur are going into the January transfer window looking for a new centre-back.

With just a matter of days separating football clubs and the January transfer market, it seems Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici have identified an area of the squad they wish to improve.

Since the Italian arrived, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have been his go-to options at centre-back as he opts to field a back three.

However, despite the Lilywhites keeping four clean sheets from their seven league games with the 52-year-old in the dugout, it seems he is still keen to bolster the defence.

With recent reports linking Spurs to a potential swoop for Stefan de Vrij, Romano provided the following claim on Fabio Paratici’s plans for the January window.

“Let’s see what happens in the summer, but as of now, Antonio Conte [has] changed Harry Kane’s mind and we will see what will change also in the transfer market because we know that Tottenham want to go for players that are perfect for Antonio Conte’s ideas.

“So they need a centre-back, and the plan in January is to look for a centre-back. We will see if they will find the right opportunity, but they are looking for centre-backs.”

TIF Thoughts on Spurs’ centre-back options…

Spurs have looked pretty solid at the back since Conte arrived with just four goals conceded in his seven league games in charge, however, you could argue there is still room for improvement.

The north London side acquired the 2020/21 Serie A defender of the year over the summer, but due to injuries and quarantine reasons, Cristian Romero has only been able to feature seven times in the league (via Transfermarkt) since his loan switch.

Romero has only made two appearances under Conte and we think he is likely to slot straight back into the side when he returns given the money involved in his deal – in what is believed to be an expectation to buy the Argentine.

Although players such as Davies and Sanchez have fared well under Conte so far, if Spurs can bring back Romero and potentially an experienced defender such as De Vrij, it would make a formidable defence on paper.

We’ve been desperate for another striker for years, go out and sign Vlahovic as our top priority. Do not leave us short here again.
