Football journalist Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest Touchline Talk show to discuss the expected arrivals at Newcastle United in the January transfer window.
It is expected to be a big window for the Tyneside club with one final chance to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad for their second half of the season fight against relegation.
Do NUFC need more than four signings?
Yes
No
And Jones had an encouraging claim to drop on the Newcastle fans with the transfer specialist revealing how he expects the Tyneside club to make four additions to their squad in January.
Eddie Howe’s side will not play Premier League football until 15 January now as a result of their postponed game against Southampton for this weekend.
And with the Toon now having time to make some moves in the January market before they next take to the field in the league, Jones had the following to say:
“I mean, obviously, they are going to have to sign a striker. I think they’ll try and bring in four players if they can during this window. There’ll be a couple of loans but a couple of permanents as well, they’ve got to be a little bit careful about the structuring of any deals because there’s a very good chance that this is a team that’s going down.”
TIF Thoughts on January at Newcastle…
We think four is the absolute minimum Newcastle should be looking to bring in throughout the window given their dreadful start to the 2021/22 campaign.
If it is four quality additions, then we think this could certainly help the Toon on their way to safety, however, recent injuries to Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin have left further holes in their starting XI.
Too many signings could certainly unsettle the side for the rest of the season as it could take time to gel as a squad, but we think Newcastle fans may have hoped for a couple more than four signings.
