Journalist George Caulkin has been speaking on Pod on the Tyne about the dressing room mentality within Newcastle United’s squad.

It wasn’t to be a first win of the season on Tuesday evening for Eddie Howe or Newcastle, despite taking the lead while only having 10 men since the ninth minute, thanks to Ciaran Clark picking up a straight red card.

Will Newcastle be relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The draw against Norwich City means that it is now 14 league games without a victory and they’ve also already played Southampton, the Canaries, Leeds United and Brentford at home, however, the atmosphere around the club is still seemingly a positive one.

Caulkin has revealed what a dressing room source said about the mentality amongst the squad.

“I spoke to someone around the dressing room today who said that there is still confidence that Newcastle can stay up, and he sort of said that, this is the kind of club we are – we can go to Leicester, we can get a win – it’ll be the Newcastle way of doing things.

“But at the same time, he also said that this is a culture thing, it’s a mentality, there’s been a ‘just get by’ mentality at the club where you do the bare minimum and eventually that fails.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle United…

The Magpies do look pretty nailed on for relegation now as they’ve gone 14 league games without a win in the Premier League and are six points from safety, however, they may have one last chance to stay in the fight when they take on Burnley at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Something that may help Newcastle out compared to their relegation rivals is that they are likely to receive significant backing in the January transfer window, with Luke Edwards claiming that Newcastle are taking a look at Nat Phillips, Harry Winks and Jesse Lingard, so given they have played for more successful clubs than the Magpies, their fortunes could yet turn around in the new year.
