A whole host of Newcastle United fans were delighted on Twitter to see former player Georginio Wijnaldum linked with a return.

Newcastle will know that signings are required in January to help revolutionise a squad that has not signed a centre-back since 2018, and the need for signings all over the pitch may have been intensified after Eddie Howe saw Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin limp off injured during Monday evening’s Premier League clash.

Will Newcastle be relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Against Manchester United, Howe started with Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton as central midfielders but with none of them prolific in the final third and adding many goals to the team, a more attack-minded midfielder could well be on the cards, and according to L’Equipe, former Magpies star Wijnaldum is someone who could be moving to Tyneside.

A lot of Newcastle fans on Twitter were buzzing to see Wijnaldum linked.

What have these Newcastle fans been saying?

“Bring him home”

@rtg_first

“Gini back? YESSS!”

@UgbajaCF

“Can’t see him joining us for another relegation battle but I’d cry to see him back in a toon top”

@NotJackCrook

“Would be class + he knows what the fans want since he’s played for us before and he’s a class player would make sense as he doesn’t get game time in PSG”

@Dylanhadzz

“Oh my, how I’d love this”

@Rea_ctor

“Would love to see this.”

@goughy1989

“No brainer’

@rkeedy80

“Love nothing better”

@gary_decarteret

It was on Tyneside where Wijnaldum truly made a name for himself, as he netted 11 goals in a Newcastle side that were eventually relegated to the Championship, but that did not put off Liverpool splashing out £25 million for the midfielder, who ended up winning both the Premier League and Champions League. Given how well he’s spoken of the club and his time with the Magpies, a reunion may yet be on the cards.
