Newcastle United fans have been reacting on Twitter to claims that the club could be set to offer Jesse Lingard an eye-watering contract at St. James’ Park.

With January rapidly approaching, the hunt for mid-season upgrades is well underway on Tyneside, with Lingard being tipped to switch the Red Devils for the Magpies.

According to journalist Ian McGarry, Newcastle are apparently prepared to offer a reported £200k-a-week package to Lingard, which follows previous reports they wanted to make him the highest-paid player in the history of the club.

What did the Newcastle fans say?

“Not worth it. Pointless throwing money at players who are only here for 1 year or so.”

@Kingfunkel

“Nah, I’d rather be relegated.”

@Chadwick_10

“Not worth it. I want people to play for Newcastle who want to be part of a new era. Not because they are offered big money.”

@geordiegirlx

“Not my money but hopefully this isn’t true although if he keeps us in the prem I’d take it can see a fair few being on that soon tbh”

“I hope we don’t go down this route. We don’t want a load of mercenaries. Either they want to come on a reasonable wage, or move on to someone that does.”

@mickycantwell

“Never pay that money for that level player. Might be a bit OTT on some signings to secure but that’s just daft.”

@NarboroughDave

Sounds crazy money and we all know he’s not worth that but we have top business savy owners, so if they think they can afford that then fair play to them. not my money.”

Starting with a relatively recent player. Who is this?

Clearly, there is some apprehension over the move from the Toon Army, with many wanting players coming to the club for the right reasons.

While this is understandable, overpaying is a worry with players there for a wage rather than to actually play for the club. Let’s not forget, Newcastle are a huge club, and if St. James’ Park is full and rocking, it’ll be a great place to play football.

Also, perhaps fans needn’t worry about a lack of commitment from the players they sign. They may well decide to come for the money, however, at the end of the day, you would imagine Lingard wants regular Premier League football, so you’d think he would give it 100% to try and keep the team up.
