We seem to be getting daily transfer links for Newcastle United with January fast approaching, not really a surprise given how terminal their position appears to be at the moment.

Not for the first time, Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard has been linked with the Toon, and Martin Hardy from the Times has a major claim on the transfer.

He believes that he is Newcastle’s number one target in January, with the club prepared to paya a substantial fee to land him. It’s added that they would also make him the highest paid player in the Tyneside club’s history should he swap Manchester for the Magpies.

How the Newcastle fans reacted to the Lingard links

“Bang average player that we don’t need, great. We need defenders, a striker and creative midfielder, not a fast runner with no end product.” @NUFCTVTwit

“Better options than him out there. West Ham hold all the cards anyway, plus what if Rangnick wants him?” @Nufc2Everything

“I’m not sure he should be a priority. Would rather focus on a CDM and CB before the more attacking elements.” @Louismc1988

“If he can’t get a regular place in that Man United team what does he bring to us?” @JeffEll25621156

“He shines against Andorra and San Marino, never considered to play against strong teams. I’ve got a lad in my grassroots team who has one good game a season against the bottom team!” @hughjarse72

“We need defenders as a priority.” @scott_eddowes

“In a heartbeat” @cookemonster72

“Considering the position we’re in Jesse Lingard would be a tremendous signing” @Grayzo17

“Jesse Lingard has shown he can carry a team. Throw the money at him.” @connorlinsdell9

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

Clearly a number of the Toon Army aren’t impressed with the latest update, with a number of different players needed.

Realistically, Eddie Howe will bring in multiple players in January, so it’s not time to panic yet about what is needed instead.

If Lingard can capture some of his form from his loan spell at West Ham United last season, then it will be a great signing. That’s the big question though, it’s taken him a while to find any sort of consistency and has then been struggling for minutes at Old Trafford.
