Newcastle United fans have been reacting to comments made by Eddie Howe about the future of Sean Longstaff.

The 24-year-old midfielder and academy graduate first burst onto the scene at St. James’ Park during the latter end of the 2018/19 season, and has since gone on to make 81 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and chipping in with four assists during that time.

However, his long-term future at the club is under a little bit of doubt.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and speaking in his most recent press conference ahead of their game with Leicester City on Sunday (via Lee Ryder), Newcastle boss Howe seemed to hint that his performances would dictate whether or not a new deal would be coming his way: “He can show to me and the club he has a long-term future here. It’s in his hands as well not just our hands.”

Comments which certainly sparked some interesting comments from the Newcastle United fans on Twitter when they saw it pop onto their timeline:

“ie “he’s not showing me enough in training to merit being here beyond the season as things stand””

“Sean has had plenty of game time and like the bulk of the current squad is simply not good enough.”
“Both Longstaffs woefully mismanaged by the previous regime. Could easily remove Longstaff for any other player for that matter.”
“Let it run down and let him leave his brother can do the same neither are good enough.”
“Got to earn a contract at Newcastle United these days, they don’t just get handed to you like before.”
“Could leave on a free in 6 months; not that long ago #NUFC, me included were claiming £50m is peanuts and he’s better than Declan Rice. We were all very very very wrong. Not to say I don’t still rate him but Howe sums it perfect, he needs to start showing again.”
“Make or break for him this Christmas period with the oration that will be needed. Needs to step up. Last time he came on he constantly gave the ball away”
“Code for “he needs to show more”? … wouldn’t suprise me”

However, given reports that suggest he could be on his way out of the club with ‘Everton and others around Europe’ supposedly taking a look at him, it may well be the case that he’s moved out of the club before he’s really given a chance to prove himself.
