Newcastle United fans have been reacting to claims from journalist Fabrizio Romano regarding a potential swoop for Sven Botman.

The noted journalist recently took to Twitter to claim that Newcastle were ‘seriously interested’ in signing Botman from French side Lille during the upcoming window, but did hint that there was likely to be some competition for his signature, mainly from AC Milan.

Taking to Twitter once again, Romano updated his claim and stated that although Newcastle were looking for more than one centre-back, the Dutch defender was still top of the list for Eddie Howe’s men, and that they were still waiting for Lille to get back to them when it comes to an asking price.

The news that Botman was top of the list reached Newcastle fans on Twitter, where there was plenty of excitement at the news:

“This would be our best CB signing since Woodgate, make no mistake.”

“We’ve made the big time, here we go”
“Need to get these through the door ASAP!!!!”
“We are massive.”
“Would love this kid!”
“Pay the money and get him in asap!! Ready for Watford game along side trippier and A.N.Other”
“It honestly is mental how am used to being linked with championship players to seeing us being linked to players of that calibre”
“Really hope we get Botman and Trippier in early. Would be a fantastic start to the window and good to hear we want two centre backs because they are needed!”

Can you see Botman leaving Lille for NUFC?

Botman has been described as a ‘rising defensive star’, and with Newcastle currently in possession of the worst defence in the league with 41 goals conceded, you can see why they would be interested in him and why fans would be excited at the prospect. However, whether or not they can get the deal over the line will be a different matter entirely.
