Chris Waugh has been speaking on the Pod on the Tyne podcast about Newcastle United’s reported director of football target Dan Ashworth.
The Magpies are still yet to hire a permanent director of football, although Nick Hammond is currently working on a temporary basis as a consultant to the club’s owners, which will help them work through the January transfer window.
Will Newcastle be relegated?
Newcastle parted ways with Lee Charnley after a few weeks of the takeover being passed through and could finally be about to seal a breakthrough on their hunt for his replacement, as The Athletic has reported that Dan Ashworth has been given permission by Brighton & Hove Albion to speak with the Magpies over a role at the club – and he would appear to arrive with a great reputation.
Waugh has revealed what people within the game think of Ashworth.
“He is very, very highly rated and someone who was obviously at the FA previously, and I think that in many ways, speaking to quite a few people, they seem to think it would make a lot of sense if Newcastle were going to go for Dan Ashworth.”
TIF Thoughts on Ashworth…
With Waugh claiming that people in the game believe it would make sense for Newcastle to move for Ashworth, then that could well help speed things along in terms of getting him appointed and handed a title at the club as he would likely come with glowing references that would delight PIF.
Ashworth has been with Brighton since 2018 when he left the FA, so he would seemingly be settled on the south coast and would take a lot for him to uproot and move to the other end of the country, but given the financial muscle he would be able to work with, it could be a golden ticket of an opportunity which is too good to turn down.
