TalkSport pundit and former Premier League player Trevor Sinclair has given his thoughts on Brendan Rodgers following Leicester City’s start to the season.

Having ridden incredible highs in recent years, finishing 5th in the Premier League in back-to-back seasons and winning the FA Cup, the Foxes have struggled so far in 2021/22, as they currently sit 11th in the Premier League and were knocked out of the Europa League after a loss to Napoli in midweek.

Speaking about their season on TalkSport, Sinclair gave his assessment of things and felt that based on the work that he had done for the club recently, as well as some of the mitigating circumstances that he’s faced such as injury and illness issues, that the club would stick by Rodgers for now:

To kick off this quiz on Leicester City's 2019/20 season, who is the only outfield player to have appeared in all 38 of the Foxes' Premier League games in the 2019/20 campaign?

“He knows he’s got problems, he’s had horrendous injuries in that backline. But they need to solve it and they need to come up with a way of keeping clean sheets while still having that threat going forward.

“But [the owner is] not going to sack him. He’s done, fifth twice on the roll in the Premier League, won the FA Cup, I think Brendan Rodgers has shown a lot of loyalty to Leicester City as well, because I think he has been a sought-after manager.

“And he’s shown that he wants to stay at the club because he can see good things going on at the King Power Stadium, can see good things going on with the owners, the training facilities, the club is on the up. They’re having a bit of a blip, but I think the club are going to back him, and he will come good because we all know he’s a top manager.”

Should Rodgers be sacked if he fails to lead Leicester into the Champions League?

No

Whilst Sinclair is right when it comes to what Rodgers has done for the club in recent seasons, at the end of the day this is a business and the club might have to make decisions based on what’s best for the good of the club rather than just based on sentimentality.

They did it with Claudio Ranieri after all, sacking him after he guided them to the league and out of the group stages of the Champions League because of their relegation fears, and Rodgers shouldn’t be above the same level of danger as the Italian was at that time.

And whilst the Foxes aren’t in any immediate danger right now as they sit nine points above the relegation zone, if things don’t pick up soon and they slide down the table, then it shouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility that the owners will get rid of Rodgers before the end of the season.
