Football journalist Pete O’Rourke has been speaking on the latest edition of Touchline Talk to discuss Everton’s transfer plans for the January transfer window.

The Toffees have endured a terrible spell of Premier League form in recent weeks, which came to an end on Monday night with an impressive 2-1 win at Goodison Park.

However, Rafael Benitez’s side still sit in an underwhelming 12th spot in the Premier League table, which leaves them five points off the Europa Conference League spot which Arsenal currently occupy.

It wasn’t exactly a summer of spending for the Merseyside club, with a mere total of £1.8m spent across their five arrivals, with Demarai Gray the only player they actually spent money on.

Discussing potential areas in which Benitez’s men may look at improving next month, O’Rourke had the following to say on the Toffees’ transfer stance:

“It’s looking likely it will be the loan market if they are to make any January signings. From what I’m hearing, a centre-back is on the list of potential targets for Rafa Benitez.”

TIF Thoughts on Everton’s transfer plans…

If the stats are anything to go by, then yes, it looks like Benitez could do with strengthening his defence, with the Toffees having conceded the fifth-most goals (25) of any side in the Premier League this season.

Reports have emerged suggesting Yerry Mina could be one of the players who could be offloaded in the coming months, and if they were to allow their second-oldest centre-back to depart, it would leave them lacking slightly in experience at centre-half.

However, given O’Rourke believes they are only expected to be active in the loan market next month, we have serious question marks over what standard of player they’d be able to acquire.
