Football writer Charles Watts has revealed that Arsenal have ‘long admired’ Jonathan David amid current interest.

With the January transfer market not so far away now, there has been much talk about the Gunners’ need to sign a new striker. The Lille forward is one of those names to have been mentioned in recent times.

While addressing the talk on his YouTube channel, Watts explained that Arsenal actually ‘liked’ the 21-year-old even before he ended up in France, but decided against making a move for him back then.

The journalist outlined his information, saying: “He’s a player that Arsenal have long admired, Jonathan David. They liked him when he was over in Belgium before he made the move to Lille.

“They opted not to make the move then, he’s continued to impress since he’s gone to France. It took him a while to settle, but he’s scoring goals, he is playing very well internationally for Canada as well.

“And I think he’s certainly one that it wouldn’t surprise me, again, if Arsenal had him very much high up on the list of possible targets.”

TIF Thoughts on Jonathan David and Arsenal…

With both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah set to see their contracts expire this summer and with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struggling for form, it should come as no surprise to hear Arsenal want to find a new striker.

Would Dominic Calvert-Lewin be a good fit for Arsenal?

No

If they were to sign the £31.5m-rated David, they would certainly be acquiring an exciting talent. After all, he is currently the top scorer in Ligue 1 with 11 goals – which puts him ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

The fact that the Gunners have had an eye on the young striker for so long should mean they will have a strong understanding of his strengths and weaknesses and whether or not he would be a good fit for the team. This should bode well for Mikel Arteta and co if they do opt to make a move.
