West Bromwich Albion journalist Joe Masi has given his thoughts on the club’s plans for the January transfer window following comments by Valérien Ismael.

West Bromwich Albion moved up to third in the Championship table this past weekend, thanks to a 2-1 victory away at Coventry City with one goal from Karlan Grant and an own goal from Kyle McFadzean enough to give them the points. However whilst they are third in the table, there are still areas that they could improve on, with the January transfer window the perfect opportunity to do so.

Speaking on the Express and Star’s YouTube channel following their victory over Coventry City (4:42), Masi discussed comments that Ismael made ahead of the game about players that the club could sign in January, where he claimed he had a ‘list with what we need for the next step’, and he believed that a centre-forward was going to be one of those targets:

Do you know the record signing for these Championship sides? Let's see if you do, starting with Fulham

“We spoke to Ismael yesterday, pregame on Friday, asked him about transfers and he said he is confident of additions. It was an interesting way of putting it. I think he believes he will get one or two players next month that will improve this side. We imagine one of those would be a striker, an out and out centre-forward, a goalscorer hopefully.”

Will West Brom earn promotion?

Yes!

No!

No!

A centre-forward and a goalscorer is certainly something that West Bromwich Albion should be looking at this window, because the numbers show that, despite being third in the table, it’s an area that could do with some improvement.

The table shows that whilst they do have a reasonable return of goals, with 29 from their opening 21 games, it still trails well behind the top two in the division, with Fulham on 50 and AFC Bournemouth on 37, with two other sides in the top 6 also having scored more, with QPR on 33 and Blackburn Rovers on 35, so they need more goals to keep up with the rest of the chasing pack.

And on top of that, Grant has been their main source of goals this season with nine, with no other player getting above five, so they may need to bring in a more reliable backup option just in case he gets injured or suspended.

Whether or not Ismael decides to go down the route that Masi hints he could though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
