Sunderland fans have been reacting to the performance of Lynden Gooch during their game in the Carabao Cup.

Sunderland have been the Cinderella story of the tournament, the League One side knocking out Championship side Queens Park Rangers on their way to the quarter-final, and coming up against an Arsenal side that featured a few fringe players, there was always the chance for them to carry on their impressive run.

However, that run came to a shuddering end as they were on the receiving end of a 5-1 score, with Arsenal racing into a 2-0 lead inside the opening half-hour.

Do you know the record signing for these Championship sides? Let's see if you do, starting with Fulham

One of the reasons for their defeat, at least according to the fans who were commenting online, was the American Gooch, with fans slamming him for both a lack of discipline – which saw him given a yellow card during the first half – as well as his overall defensive capabilities:

“Gooch is getting absolutely skinned every time Pepe/Cedric run at him.”

“Gooch man, go with the runner”
“Get Gooch on the next flight back to America! Man is a fraud”
“Gooch needs to be careful here. He’s pumped and one rash challenge from a red card”
“Gooch booked? Now there’s a surprise…”
“Still ain’t seen Gooch have a decent game”
“Gooch on a yellow is a liability for me”

Whilst some excuses can be made given the level of opposition Sunderland were playing against, hopefully this isn’t something that carries on into their league form and potentially cost them promotion to the Championship.
