TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan has given his thoughts on Derby County boss Wayne Rooney following recent developments regarding a potential takeover of the club.

The former England captain has certainly drawn the short straw when it comes to the start of his managerial career, having inherited a Derby side that had so many financial problems that finally caught up to them and saw them deducted a total of 21 points this season, making relegation a near-inevitability.

The club could be about to be taken over by American businessman Chris Kirchner, which might provide the Rams with an opportunity to rebuild once again following some rather down years recently.

And speaking on TalkSport, Jordan discussed what role Rooney – who has never managed or played in League One before – could take on under a new regime if the takeover is completed, noting that he might have some value to the club because of his name and playing career:

“I know that Kirchner has the desire to buy an English football club because he sees the growth opportunity in America. And he also believes, from what I understand from a relatively reliable source, that he sees the reputation that Rooney developed in the American leagues by playing for D.C. [United].

“He’s seen the effect of [Steven] Gerrard, and believes that someone like Rooney would be a massive advantage to Derby County in his particular plans for what he wants to do with it and how he believes that the American football world will react economically to Wayne Rooney running a Derby County that this guy is going to put some money in and try and push through the gears.”

Do you think Rooney will be DCFC manager next season?

No

If what Jordan is hinting at with his claim is correct, then it comes across as rather strange that the club’s new owner might keep hold of Rooney purely because of his value economically as opposed to what he is like as a manager, which as it stands isn’t very good.

Rooney’s record in the dugout isn’t all that impressive, and whilst allowances should be made for having his hands tied behind his back somewhat by matters out of his control, it is brave to assume that things will just change once the financial turmoil has been sorted out at Pride Park.

If Derby want to move up the leagues and reach the Premier League – which is one surefire way to financial gain if they reach the top flight – then they need to appoint someone with more experience in getting teams there rather than simply looking at name value.
