Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel, journalist Derek Clark has been speaking about the managerial search ongoing at Ibrox.

On Thursday, Steven Gerrard was announced as the new manager of Aston Villa, bringing an end to the Englishman’s three-year spell with the Gers.

Would Smith be a good appointment?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Gerrard has been appointed as the replacement for Dean Smith with Villa currently on the back of a five-game run of defeats in the Premier League and slumped in 16th place in the table.

The 50-year-old manager had been at Villa for just over three years himself and has recently been linked with the Norwich City job after they sacked Daniel Farke.

And discussing the former Villa manager’s credentials, Clark discussed whether Smith would make a suitable replacement at Ibrox for the man who has replaced him at Villa Park.

(5:20) “Dean Smith for me would be ironically a really good appointment if Rangers were to approach a guy of that calibre who plays a similar fashion. I think he would command respect, I think it was shabbily treated by Aston Villa but which should have really acted as perhaps a warning to Steven Gerrard. I mean, it’s the appointing the eighth manager in a decade now.”

TIF Thoughts on Smith to Rangers…

Given that Gerrard has swapped Glasgow for a trip to Villa Park, it seems a rather interesting prospect that Smith could potentially head the other way, with Birmingham Live even dubbing it as a potential ‘shock’ move.

Smith would certainly go into the role at Ibrox with more experience than Gerrard did when he was appointed over three years ago.

However, we think it is essential the Englishman does not rush straight back into management unless he is absolutely sure the fit is right for him.

The 50-year-old has shown a consistent progression up the leagues over the course of his 10 years in first-team management so we would be interested to see how he would get on in the Scottish Premiership.

It would be interesting to see how Smith would be welcomed at Ibrox if he was appointed given the circumstances of who has replaced him at Villa Park.
