As Newcastle United’s search for their Steve Bruce replacement continues, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has been speaking about one of the latest developments to emerge.

It has already been a week filled with speculation surrounding the vacant role on Tyneside with Unai Emery heavily linked and then confirming he will be remaining at Villarreal.

Would Fonseca be a good appointment?

This was then followed by reports suggesting Eddie Howe was the next candidate in line, with the Toon believed to be holding advanced talks with the 43-year-old.

However, it has been suggested Paulo Fonseca could be back in the running for the role, with a source close to the manager claiming he would be keen on the vacancy at St. James’ Park.

Discussing the information he had about the development, Downie was speaking outside of Newcastle’s stadium to discuss the latest in the Toon’s search for a new manager.

“Paulo Fonseca, he’s pretty much made it clear he’s interested in the position, and a source close to him has told us in the last hour that he’d be keen to speak to Newcastle United to reignite his talks, should they still be interested in his services.

“Of course, as I say, it is someone that the club looked at before they turned their attentions to Unai Emery and made him their number-one target. It’ll be interesting to see whether Newcastle do fancy turning their attentions to Fonseca.”

TIF Thoughts on Fonseca…

Fonseca had been linked with the vacant Tottenham Hotspur job during the summer, but it is believed his attacking philosophy was not to the fancy of their director of football, Fabio Paratici.

We do have some concerns about whether he would be a suitable match for the vacant Toon job given their current league position.

Newcastle have already conceded 23 goals in the league this season, so we do wonder whether Fonseca’s attacking mind would see this worsen or whether it would take some pressure off the Toon’s defenders.

Regardless, we do not think the Newcastle board can afford to hold out for too much longer given the 11th league game of the season is approaching and they are still searching for their first win.
