Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has blamed those in charge at his old club for Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide’s transfers to Celtic.

Both players joined Celtic in the summer after their contracts at Hillsborough expired, with Shaw agreeing his pre-contract deal back in March.

Since then, though, both Shaw and Urhoghide have barely featured for the Scottish giants, with their only appearances so far coming in the Scottish Challenge Cup.

Even so, Palmer has not been critical of the pair’s decision to leave Wednesday. He told TIF in an exclusive interview:

“They should never have got into the position where they were out of contract. That’s Sheffield Wednesday’s fault.

“They should have secured the players well, well before that. If you’ve got good players, you don’t let them get into that situation unless you want to lose them and that’s what’s happened.”

While things may not be going as planned for Shaw and Urhoghide, the ex-Wednesday duo are still just 20 and 21 years of age respectively. Time is on their side, though it would not be a surprise if they had to go out on loan before breaking into the Celtic first team.

As for Wednesday, Darren Moore’s side are surviving without the two youngsters as they continue to fight for promotion.
