Journalist Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest edition of Touchline Talk to discuss the latest surrounding Derby County.

It has been another testing week for the Rams as their misery of being planted to the bottom of the Championship was only added to during the week with another points deduction.

Do you think Rooney will be DCFC manager next season?

Yes

No

Wayne Rooney’s side have been hit with a further nine-point deduction for breaching the EFL’s accounting rules, which now leaves them further adrift of survival as they sit on -3 points.

The 36-year-old has now been in charge at Pride Park permanently since January this year and the latest points deduction has led Jones to question whether he will still be there next season.

Speaking on whether Derby fans can expect to see Rooney at the club next season if they are to drop down into League One, Jones had the following to say.

“I’m not sure about next season. I mean, I give him credit for staying now. And I think, to be honest, he’s kind of got a free hit at this point – he’s been doing well, I think he’s probably done better than people would have expected he would have done.

“I don’t think he’s going to accept managing in League One, especially in these circumstances, but his CV is improving with every point he picks up at the moment.

“And I know that there are definitely other EFL clubs starting to look towards him as options if they do change manager. So I don’t think it’ll be too far in the distant future, actually, that Wayne Rooney will have a decision to make over whether he stays or actually whether he has to say, ‘look, I need to take another job now’.”

TIF Thoughts on Rooney’s future…

Ultimately, Rooney was able to achieve what he was asked of last season in keeping the Rams in the Championship – albeit by the skin of their teeth.

And this season, Derby have had their issues with issues as basic as fielding a squad, with the early stages of the season seeing Rooney name a squad littered with teenagers.

The club have now been deducted a total of 21 points this season and they remain 18 points adrift of safety, which is a sign of the success on the field for Rooney’s side despite the difficulties endured off it.

For an individual who has enjoyed such success as a player, we find it difficult to imagine Rooney wanting to stick around if Derby do drop down to League One, especially given Jones’ belief in other clubs already eyeing him as a potential target.
