Football journalist Tony Haggerty has urged Celtic to go out and sign St. Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark this January.

Over the summer, the Bhoys signed experienced former England international Joe Hart to play between the sticks. While that deal looks to have been a good move, there are still doubts surrounding the other squad options if the former Tottenham Hotspur keeper was to suffer an injury.

Vasilis Barkas is the current backup option, but he has failed to convince in the past, while the same can also be said of alternative choice Scott Bain.

When talking about the issue on A Celtic State of Mind, Haggerty claimed that Clark would be the exact sort of player Celtic should go out and buy.

Is Anthony Ralston Celtic's best fullback?

He explained himself, saying: “I know he’s been linked with a move to Rangers, but go and get him. Because Zander Clark has proven his worth.

He went on to add: “You know what, he is a good goalkeeper. He’s one of the best in the Scottish league. So I would go and ask the question.”

TIF thoughts on Zander Clark and Celtic…

With 10 clean sheets under his belt already this season, Hart has certainly proven himself to be a quality player for the Bhoys. However, now aged 34 years old, there will be doubts over the veteran’s ability to stay fit throughout a whole campaign.

Clark has proven his reliability for St. Johnstone, playing in all 13 league games for the Scottish club this season. He actually hasn’t missed an SPFL game since September 2020.

However, as Haggerty mentioned, Rangers have already been linked with a move for the 29-year-old. So, if Celtic were interested in making any deal happen, they may face fierce competition from their biggest rivals.
