Celtic had to rely on a tiny bit of fortune as they scraped past Aberdeen to collect all three points at Celtic Park.

Skipper Callum McGregor set up Jota to open the scoring for the hosts, before Liel Abada’s challenge resulted in a penalty which Lewis Ferguson converted.

Then on the hour mark, provider turned scorer rather fortuitously as McGregor converted home off his back side to secure the points.

While having a good laugh about the nature of his goal on social media, the Celtic faithful were more than delighted with their leader’s performance.

How the Celtic fans reacted

“Callum McGregor was outstanding.” @the_LEGEND1976

“Callum McGregor is some player!” @cheesybiscuit_

“Big 3 points today, we dominated the first 20 minutes then let them back into it. McGregor my MOTM today covered every angle of the pitch! His goal though” @Celtic_67

The captain showed his importance today, involved in both goals in a 2-1 win will be incredibly satisfying. Something he’s going to have to keep up throughout the season as they hunt down the league leaders.

After today’s win, the Celtic Park outfit find themselves four points adrift of the summit, where their arch rivals Rangers are currently perched. Ange Postecoglou and his side will be back at home later in the week. This time they host third place Hearts in a real six pointer.

Given Rangers’ comfortable win over Livingston, Postecoglou knows his side can’t afford another slip up if they are to catch the defending champions.
