Fabrizio Romano has been speaking about where Rangers stand in their desire to appoint Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Ibrox.

The former Dutch midfielder enjoyed an illustrious career that saw him play for sides such as Barcelona, Rangers and Arsenal. Since his retirement in 2010, he has gone into management, having been in the dugout with his former club Feyenoord between 2015 and 2019 before then taking over Guangzhou City in the Chinese Super League for 23 games.

Having been out of management since December 2020, it appears that exodus could now be coming to an end, as he is reportedly in talks with Rangers to take over from Steven Gerrard, who departed for Aston Villa last week.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel, Romano has been discussing where the two parties are at in discussions.

“I’m told that talks with Gio van Bronckhorst are progressing so well in the last hours. It is not done yet, but talks are going so well. They had two meetings with Gio van Bronckhorst, he is a former Rangers player, too, so it’s a serious possibility. Let’s see if today or tomorrow [Thursday] it will be resolved.”

TIF Thoughts on Van Bronckhorst…

This could potentially be the second managerial appointment in a row that could be considered as a gamble by the Rangers board after they handed Gerrard his first job in first-team management, but that proved to be a smart move and helped them stop Celtic from winning 10 league titles in a row.

Tore André Flo is Rangers club-record signing, but how much was he bought for?

Van Bronckhorst has only ever managed in the Eredivisie and the Chinese Super League, so while he had success within the home comforts of Feyenoord, the fact that he has been away from European football management for a good few years now could see him be a risky pick for the Rangers board.
