Wolves journalist Liam Keen has given his thoughts on comments made by Renato Sanches and the implications it might have on a potential move to the club.

Reports this past summer seemed to suggest that Wolves were in the process of bringing the Portuguese midfielder to Molineux, with Wolves seemingly willing to take a risk on him despite the fact he was carrying an injury.

That injury ultimately meant the deal didn’t go through, and speaking in an interview with French outlet L’Equipe (via Goal), Sanches revealed that La Liga giants Barcelona were also interested in signing him this past summer, and that a few more clubs – namely AC Milan and Arsenal – have taken an interest in signing him at some point in the future.

In what position did Wolves finish in these seasons? Starting off with 2020/21

Keen discussed Sanches’ comments on the latest edition of the E&S Wolves podcast, and spoke about the kind of impact that it might have on Wolves trying to come back and sign him once again in the future:

“He’s actually come out recently and said in an interview that there was a deal agreed for him to go to Barcelona until his injury actually initially happened. And then he also hinted that Arsenal and AC Milan might be interested. So if that’s the case, it seems hard to believe that Wolves may land him.

“But for him to come out and say that out in public is interesting, because players, depending on who they are, will play games by putting news out there, whether it’s true or not true. So take it all with a pinch of salt, I’d say, and wait until we actually get to the moment when players can come in.

“He’s on the radar for Wolves. I think it’s difficult to say any more than that, really. There’s no guarantees they’re going to bring him in, certainly. But he’s on the radar, they’re aware of him, and yes, they were in for him and it was close.”

Do you want Sanches at Molineux?

It might appear that Wolves may have missed the boat on this one given the size of the clubs that appear to be fighting for his signature, but they aren’t totally out of the running just yet.

Given their impressive start to the season, with Bruno Lage’s men sitting sixth in the table, right behind Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, they are looking good for a potential challenge for European football next season, just as they were able to do under former boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

And given how deep negotiations went last time between the two sides, there is at least a decent starting point for them to work with if Wolves decide to make a move for him once again.

Perhaps Wolves could convince Sanches that he is the boost that they need to get over the top and seal European football next season, and that might entice him to make the move to Molineux. It’s difficult, as Keen points out, but it certainly shouldn’t be ruled out at this stage.
