Dean Jones has been speaking on The Done Deal Show about how Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Antonio Rudiger.

Spurs managed to bring in the best defender from the Serie A last season over the summer in Cristian Romero, but he has only managed to start six league games so far.

Will Tottenham win a trophy under Antonio Conte?

Antonio Conte has overseen two matches as Spurs manager, with one seeing his side keep a clean sheet against Everton but his debut match saw them concede two at home to Vitesse Arnhem, so defensive reinforcements may be on the cards in January, as Conte is thought to have been handed plenty of cash to build his squad.

Someone they have been linked with previously is Chelsea defender Rudiger, who is set to be out of contract in the summer, so Spurs might be able to strike a bargain deal in January or even tempt him to join as a free agent next summer.

Jones spoke about Spurs’ interest in Rudiger.

He said: “You look at somebody I mentioned earlier, Antonio Rudiger – Tottenham’s interest in him is genuine, and from what he’s heard so far, they’re probably the club willing to push the boat out the most in terms of salary as well.

“If they were able to sign somebody like Rudiger, obviously, we’d raise our eyebrows a bit because to go from Chelsea to Tottenham at this point – but it would show their intentions.”

TIF Thoughts on Spurs’ interest in Rudiger…

It is a huge shock that Chelsea have not been able to tie down Rudiger to a new contract, especially given how regularly he has featured since moving to Stamford Bridge, and according to Fabrizio Romano, ‘many clubs’ are interested in him, so he’s clearly a player in demand.

If Spurs were able to sign Rudiger as a free agent from one of their biggest rivals this summer, it would be a massive coup for the club – and one they may be able to pull off now that they have a serial winner in the dugout in Conte.

Rudiger is not just a defender for a top team, he’s someone that can spring attacks and get the team moving up the pitch, as he has carried the ball the most in the Chelsea squad, as well as, amazingly, being second in the number of carries into the opposition’s final third (FBRef). For a centre-back, that is a surreal statistic, but just goes to show what he would bring to this Tottenham side.
