Many Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter after news emerged linking Dutch star Steven Bergwijn with a departure from the Lilywhites.
According to De Telegraaf chief reporter Valentijn Driessen, Ajax may move for Steven Bergwijn in the upcoming January transfer window, with the Dutch champions reportedly considering making a move for the Spurs winger should David Neres leave the club.
Will Levy back Conte in January?
Speaking on Veronica Inside, Driessen said on Ajax’s interest in the 22-year-old Spurs ace: “They are also working on bringing in Bergwijn, that is also renting. If Neres leaves, you must have another player for that. That should be Bergwijn.”
What did these Spurs fans make of the transfer link?
“Another one who I don’t dislike but if we can get money in for him then it’s a no-brainer. Conte doesn’t play wingers anyway”
“May not be the worst move for us, hasn’t hit the heights required if I’m honest!”
“Happy for any player to be sold that Conte doesn’t think is good enough. Gotta be cutthroat if we want success under Conte”
“Great news. Let’s hope it happens”
Bergwijn is undoubtedly a player of quality and talent but has only shown glimpses of his potential in morth London, scoring just four goals and recording nine assists in 60 appearances for the Lilywhites – certainly an underwhelming return for a player regarded as one of the Eredivisie’s most exciting talents before joining Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020.
However, it would be a surprise if newly appointed manager Antonio Conte gives any consideration in sanctioning a January departure for Bergwijn, especially considering the number of competitions Spurs are involved in this season.
