Alasdair Gold has been speaking about Antonio Conte’s arrival and all things Tottenham Hotspur related on his latest YouTube video

Along with the arrival of the former Inter manager, the north London club announced the promotion of Ryan Mason, who becomes part of Conte’s staff of first-team coaches.

Was this a good move to promote Mason?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The 30-year-old had previously been working within the club’s academy system and even stepped in as interim manager for the first team following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Mason was a product of the Spurs academy during his playing days and went on to make 70 appearances for the Lilywhites across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

Speaking about the decision to promote Mason from the academy setup and into the first team, Gold had the following to say on the details behind Mason’s promotion.

“Ryan Mason, appointed first-team coach – I’m sure some people might have thought, ‘Oh, it’s a forced-upon-him appointment by the club’. Absolutely not, absolutely not.

“Conte came in with a personal request to have Mason join his team. I think he was really impressed with him as well in those first couple of training sessions where he was ‘observing’ the training sessions. And I understand, from people I know, who know Ryan Mason, that he would not have taken the role had it been a club decision. He had no interest in that.”

TIF Thoughts on Mason at Spurs…

We think this is the perfect move for Mason to make as he looks to expand on his experience gained at such a young age, especially given the achievements the Italian has earned throughout his career.

Conte has already managed hundreds of games across multiple leagues and with this, Mason should be looking to gain some knowledge from the 52-year-old’s experience across Serie A and the Premier League.

One of the main positives we think Mason should take from this decision was Gold’s claim that the promotion was Conte’s decision. This shows the vastly experienced Italian sees a lot of potential in Mason which should be a huge confidence boost for the 30-year-old.
